Human+AI Practice Pathway

From AI-Vulnerable to AI-Partnered Courses

Move from brittle assignments and reactive AI policies to course designs that make thinking visible, widen meaningful participation, build judgment, and use AI as a genuine learning partner.

Six guided Studios · Designed for institution-supported cohorts of up to 25 named participants

From vulnerable assignments to designed partnership

This pathway helps faculty diagnose where AI exposes a course or assignment, then redesign the learning experience around dialogue, discernment, equitable access, and support that fades as student capability grows.

  • Six sequenced, interactive Practice Studios
  • Facilitator-supported discussion and application
  • A culminating AI-partnered course or assignment redesign
  • Private responses stored in each participant’s browser

Free foundation: From Prompting to Partnership is available before this pathway, but it is not one of the six required Studios. Facilitators may waive it when participants already demonstrate the foundational capabilities.

Discuss institutional access

Who it is for and how it works

From AI-Vulnerable to AI-Partnered Courses is designed primarily for faculty and instructional staff who shape courses, assignments, assessment, or learning support. Participants apply each Studio directly to a course or assignment they can redesign.

Faculty-centered pathway

Course and assignment redesign in context

Faculty bring a current course, assignment, or assessment challenge. Across the six Studios, they identify what AI has made vulnerable and build a more durable, partnership-oriented learning design.

Instructional designers, faculty developers, librarians, and academic support staff can participate when their roles directly support course and assignment design.

For a broader faculty-and-staff cohort, the Thinking With AI pathway develops Human+AI practices that transfer across institutional roles.

Local facilitation

A cohort convener, not an AI lecturer

The institution identifies one primary facilitator. That person does not need to be an AI expert or teach the six Studios; the interactive Practice Studios provide the core learning experience.

The facilitator keeps the group on schedule, hosts short discussions, helps participants connect the practices to their roles, monitors completion, and guides and reviews the course and assignment redesign projects.

The Competency Practice Pathway includes a train-the-trainer onboarding session, facilitator resources, and the redesign-review framework. Facilitators see completion progress, not participants' private Studio responses.

A sample eight-week schedule

This cadence combines self-paced practice, short cohort conversations, and a real course or assignment redesign.

  1. Before launch

    Prepare the cohort

Identify the facilitator, complete facilitator onboarding, enroll up to 25 participants, and confirm the cohort calendar.

  2. Week 1

    Designing for Partnership

Define the partnership-oriented learning outcome that will guide the course or assignment redesign.

  3. Week 2

What Real AI Partnership Looks Like

Diagnose where current tool-focused practices fall short of partnership and name the gap the redesign must close.

  4. Week 3

    The Assignment That Talks Back

Redesign an assignment so students use AI through questioning, challenge, response, and revision rather than one-shot answer generation.

  5. Week 4

    Designed to Fade

Engineer the support students need at the beginning and a deliberate plan for reducing that support as capability grows.

  6. Week 5

From Ghost Energy to Ghost Writers

Surface the hidden labor and access assumptions in AI-rich learning, then identify a more equitable participation strategy.

  7. Week 6

The Two Sides of the Room

Define observable evidence of developed judgment and distinguish it from fluent, polished output. Completing all six Studios earns the AI-Partnered Course Design Practice Credential.

  8. Week 7

    Pilot and gather feedback

Participants pilot or simulate their redesigned learning experience and collect feedback for revision.

  9. Week 8

    Revise, submit, and review

Participants submit revised course or assignment designs. The facilitator reviews projects with the provided framework, and approved projects earn the Human+AI Competency: AI-Partnered Course Design.

Estimated time: 75 minutes per week for Weeks 1–6. This includes approximately 45 minutes for the self-paced Studio plus a 30-minute cohort conversation. The pathway can stretch to 10–12 weeks when a cohort wants more time between Studios or for project development.
