Human+AI Practice Pathway for high school educators

Teaching for Human+AI Agency

Prepare students to work with AI while strengthening the learning, agency, integrity, relationships, and human capabilities education should develop.

Six guided Studios · Designed for school- or district-supported cohorts of up to 25 named participants

Design for students who can think and act beyond the tool

This pathway helps high school teachers move beyond reactive rules and isolated AI activities. Participants redesign one instructional unit so students learn when and how to use AI, make their thinking visible, retain meaningful responsibility, and develop capabilities they can carry into further education, work, and civic life.

  • Six sequenced, interactive Practice Studios
  • Application across subject areas and course levels
  • Local alignment with school or district policy
  • Private responses stored in each participant's browser

Free foundation: From Prompting to Partnership is available before this pathway, but it is not one of the six required Studios. Facilitators may waive it when participants already demonstrate the foundational capabilities.

Who this pathway is designed for

Best fit

Grades 9-12 teachers, librarians, instructional coaches, and teaching teams who can apply the work to a real course unit. Mixed-discipline cohorts are appropriate because participants design within their own subject and student context.

How it differs

Choose this pathway when the unit of change is a high school learning experience and student agency is the goal. Choose Beyond the Parrot when the narrower priority is moving students from one-answer AI use to critical dialogue.

Use Beyond the Parrot to create a shared critical-dialogue launch

Teaching for Human+AI Agency supports broad high school unit redesign. Beyond the Parrot can accompany it when educators and students first need a common experience of moving from one-answer AI use to questioning, push-back, verification, revision, and defensible thinking.

The public price is for the complete workshop-and-pathway bundle, not a standalone workshop: $21,500 for one workshop day plus one Competency Practice Pathway cohort, or $35,000 with the first-year Institutional Portfolio.

  • Repeated 60–90-minute student sessions in the second half of the day
  • Up to 50 students per session
  • Guided app practice at two progressive levels
  • Six connected Practice Studios

A thinking coach, not an answer tool

The app asks learners to state what they already think, frame a stronger question, defend or revise a position through structured push-back, compare human-only and AI-only work, and verify confident claims.

Level 1 introduces the Parrot Test, Goal + Context + Ask, and a push-back round. Level 2 adds a cognitive audit, five rounds of challenge, superior synthesis, and an intellectual-honesty audit.

How the cohort works

Participants bring one current unit, assignment sequence, or assessment challenge. Each Studio adds a necessary design layer, and the final artifact integrates learning goals, AI participation, visible thinking, developmental support, equitable access, and evidence of student discernment.

Teacher-centered application

Grounded in students, subject matter, and school context

The pathway does not prescribe one AI policy or one platform. Teachers identify the human capabilities their students need, then make context-sensitive choices that align with learner development, course goals, access conditions, and local policy.

Meaningful human oversight

School and district decisions remain local

Privacy, approved tools, family communication, accommodations, student accounts, and age-related safeguards must follow the institution's requirements. The pathway helps participants translate those requirements into usable learning design rather than replacing local governance.

A sample eight-week schedule

Six Studios build the instructional unit; two application weeks support piloting, feedback, and revision.

  1. Before launch

    Prepare the cohort

Identify the facilitator, enroll participants, confirm local AI requirements, and ask each teacher to select a unit or assignment sequence.

  2. Week 1

    Teaching Students How to Think

Choose the human capability students must develop and redesign one activity so their thinking becomes visible.

  3. Week 2

    Designing for Partnership

Define the learning and agency outcome that will guide appropriate AI participation.

  4. Week 3

    The Assignment That Talks Back

Build dialogue, challenge, response, and revision into the learning task.

  5. Week 4

    The Guide That Fades

Plan support that helps students begin and deliberately recedes as capability grows.

  6. Week 5

From Ghost Energy to Ghost Writers

Address unequal access, hidden support, and responsible participation in AI-rich learning.

  7. Week 6

    Judgment and Discernment

Define evidence that students can make and defend choices beyond polished AI output.

  8. Week 7

    Pilot and gather feedback

Test or simulate the redesigned unit with students or colleagues and identify where expectations, support, or evidence remain unclear.

  9. Week 8

    Revise, communicate, and submit

Complete the instructional unit, student participation protocol, implementation plan, and a concise communication for families or school stakeholders.

Estimated time: 75 minutes per week for Weeks 1–6. This includes approximately 45 minutes for the self-paced Studio plus a 30-minute cohort conversation. Pilot and project time varies with the instructional context.

  • Student-facing AI participation boundaries
  • One redesigned learning sequence
  • Visible evidence-of-thinking plan
  • Scaffold-and-fade strategy
